ASA/UKCC Level 2 Certificate for Teaching aquatics
THE LAST STEP TO BECOME A SWIMMING TEACHER
This is the industry standard for those who wish to teach unsupervised and is essential for seeking employment as a swimming teacher. Once qualified, the holder will be able to teach groups of participants of a range of abilities utilising the ASA National Plan for Teaching Swimming (or equivalent)
PRE-REQUISITES
Candidates must be 18 years or older at the start of the course. Furthermore all the candidates who want to become a swimming instructor must hold at least one of the following:
- ASA/UKCC Level 1 Certificate for Teaching Aquatics
- ASA Level 1 Certificate for Teaching Swimming post 2002
- ASA Assistant Teacher Certificate (Swimming) post September 1994
- STA (Swimming Teachers Association) Certificate post September 1994
COURSE CONTENT
The course is made up of 6 units, with Unit 6 partly examined on the course and then being completed by the candidate volunteering at a local pool (try your local swim club, or Leisure Centre.)
- Units 1 to 3. This is common to all ASA disciplines and focuses on how to teach/coach including Health & Safety, Principles of Teaching/Coaching and Sports Science.
- Units 4 & 5. These two units focus on Teaching Aquatics covering a range of technical knowledge and practical skills that will qualify the teacher to plan, deliver and evaluate a series of consecutive sessions within the context of a self prepared scheme of work.
- Unit 6 this unit is discipline specific and enables aquatic teachers to demonstrate various specific competencies already assessed in Units 1 - 5. Candidates must demonstrate the ability to plan, deliver and evaluate a minimum of 5 progressive sessions (30 minutes minimum duration each) to the same group of participants to introduce and improve performance of which 2 will be summatively assessed.
